This one was for the character design competition for 'cgtantra.com'. They selected two winners for that contest...One is me and other one is 'Hemant Trivedi'( i don't know who he is)

I was planning to make the mascot an animal so that it'll definitely add a beautiful contrast.

Since he is a rat, he's not an alien face.....he's very familiar to all of us and that makes the character more appealing i think.
Creating a beautiful contrast was another thing i was looking at.

Since this's an art community, any art stuffs with a combination with our little guy can create great drama.
Like he playing with the laptop, painting in traditional manner (etc)...

Like i said before in my previous character development submissions, strong silhouette is necessary for any character...I guess i succeeded in making that happen.
Completely spherical eyes can make the communication with the audience easier and stronger. Especially the concentric looks in his eyes including the eyeball,the cornea and the lens will definitely won't shift our concentration. The tail is another strong element. Since it's very sleek and highly flexible, it adds more possibility to add nice overlapping ( so as the animatable ears too)movements.

This is inspired from the Greek goddess "MEDUSA". But I was concentrating on getting the right color schemes( complementary Blue scheme which adds a pretty 'cool' atmosphere) done rather than sticking on to the exact character description.

One of my friends gave me this idea. Her name is 'thi minh hue'( she's from Vietnam). The only thing that is similar to this character and medusa is that her hair is a bunch of snakes. Obviously I was moving far away from the main character idea and tried to put a 'FAIRY' kind of rendering.

I was using the complementary color harmony blue and purple dominant scheme in order to create the cool night effect and it adds a far away look in the backgroung. Putting the subject mattrer in the middle ground with a different color scheme which belongs to the warm color range in the color spectrum adds more dynamism to the scene, I guess.

Trying to sketch another creature…. I guess black is the color which I should use for him. Since it is dark and enigmatic, the feeling can be conveyed easily…. just giving him blood red eyes to tell that he is ferocious. Initially I was not thinking about the yellow stripes on his face. But along the design process, I thought these stripes definitely would make a nice difference.

I designed those stripes look like they are really pointing to his eyes or that area, so that the viewers view wont get distracted. For the nose area, I was not giving that much importance, I was just keeping it look somewhat like a normal stuff. One of the regular patterns I used in this design is the usual irregular set of teeth and the exaggerated jaw opening. I became a fan of this idea when I saw T-rex in “Jurassic Park”(thanks to the legendary “Stan Winston” who is no more with us now). I guess I succeeded in making the right attitude.

Female characters are one of the most beautiful blessings. To create an appealing female anatomy with a perfect face is not easy. And it is possible to catch a similarity with the previously designed one. In the very early Disney films, we can see the similar looking female characters like Cinderella, sleeping beauty, snowhite (etc). so to make a difference is the challenging part, I guess. When it comes to female characters , all the features should be beautiful. Even secondary elements like ornaments, gadgets, clothes (etc) should also be beautiful.

Nothing fascinating in design about this one. This is one typical witch form. Everyone have seen the famous bugs bunny cartoons ( my favorite ).

The witch characters that you can see in those type of cartoons have a similar silhouette like this. I should say they are amazing. Very creepy looking and irregular hair cluster and big nose and ears( as it is an old one. It is said that nose and ears are the only facial organs that keep on growing. )I here used a strange looking skin tone ( more violet dominated clor) to create a distinction from the normal world that we know of. The witch is never complete without the magic broom. Same thing for the hat also. So I considered both of these elements also in my design.

These are some scenes from “punishment”. Some layouts including the lighting suggestions. These scenes were meant to give extra dynamism. That is why I put a lot of exaggerated perspectives. One more thing was to use the limited number of guards for the sake of scene simplicity. It was difficult to provide the feeling of a crowd with limited numbr of characters. The usage of light and more shadows was the trick I came up with. Of course story telling is one of my favorite stuffs. And animation is doing nothing but storytelling.

mutant warrrior again...Some design thoughts.

It is always fascinating to design mutants, especially when they are warriors. It is really hard to get the creature look without loosing the human elements in them. Here I tried to blend the normal human features ( torso especially ) with a fantasy creature. I put highly exaggerated neck and shoulder structure deliberately to get the real arc in his backside and hence adding a very strong silhouette. Since this guy is to be animated, it allows nice liquidity in the action too. A komodo like angular facial features gives him reptilian cold blooded look.

The character description of this particular one suggests, it is a biped but avoid the normal human torso look. I studied some bulky quadraped anatomical structure to create a seamless blending with the biped features. Totally spherical eye structure was another idea I came up with this one. Since blue is definitely not the normal skin tone, I selected that. Perfect reddish eyeball and the comparatively smaller iris makes a nice contrast. Here, this guy is supposed to be one of the commanding persons in the team( means he is who gives commands only but does nothing. That is why he is so fat. ). As you can see this is another development sketch.
